20-20 Hoopla.... The fast food, fast buck cricket!

So our team has finally won a world cup after a 24 year drought. The whole team is happy (why would they not be, some of them just turned from rags to riches, crorepatis overnight), the whole nation is happy, the players are a pampered lot, demi-gods. Does it really mean anything?

Firstly, compairing this victory to the 1983 world cup victory is downright rubbish. Period!

Secondly, Its not cricket, its one of the ways ICC is trying to curb the ever decreasing popularity of cricket in the world and another way of making fast bucks via sponsorships most of which comes through Indian Corporates and indirectly through our pockets.

Thirdly, I am appalled by the apathy shown to others sports in this country and how crickets deeds are over-emphasized especially by the media and the overtly cricket crazy fans, alike. What is with the government felicitating cricketers with prize money? Its tax payer's money for god's sake. I don't pay taxes to the government, for them to be given away in forms of prizes to already hugely overpaid cricketers. BCCI is a private body just like the upcoming ICL and while BCCI is there to take care off the players, Government of India should mind its own business and do what it is supposed to do, that is too take care of the 'people'.

The master piece comes by the way of a report in CNN-IBN's hindi channel. They are accusing Gujrat's Modi government of neglect towards the Pathan brother's, by not announcing any cash rewards like other state governments have done!!! How absurd can it be... Is this what media is supposed to report? Where is the objectivity, where's common sense? Heck most of the so-called news channels have turned into cricket mongers, with cricket hogging all the limelight and national issues like floods in bihar and orissa taking a backseat! Its total apathy of journalism and humanity in general. I can't even blame them for this, cricket in India sells and when everybody is out there to make money why would they be left behind. In all this what media conveniently forgets is their responsibility towards society and fair and proper journalism. Its a shame calling them news channels, entertainment channels would be more like it. They are all like a bollywood masala movie, its has every ingredient for the masses but far away from reality and without a motive.

Lets have a look at what Team India gets for winning this event:
1 Million Dollars (4 Crore Rupees) just for beating Australia.
3 Million Dollars (12 Crore Rupees) for winning the event.
.5 Million Dollars (2 Crore Rupees) from the tournament prize money.
On an average each player gets around 10 lakh rupees from the respective state governments.
Yuvraj gets 1 crore Rupees and a 70 lakh Rupee car for hitting six sixes in an over! Was he penalized when he was at the receiving end, being hit for 5 sixes in the last over against England.
Besides each member of the team gets a flat from the sponsor Sahara.

A stark contrast to Hockey and even the football team playing for India. What do hockey players get for winning the prestigious Asia cup... A reward of Paltry 50000 Rs, 1000 Rs for every goal scored and 2000 Rs docked for every goal conceded!!!
The football team wasn't even in the news, they beat a team 49 places ahead of them in rankings and lifted the Nehru Cup!
No wonder the step motherly treatment has hurt and angered some of the hockey players. It just shows the sad state of affairs the Indian sports are in, except off course cricket.
